The small county Louth village of Termonfeckin is located 5 miles north east of Drogheda and held its own race meetings in the late 19th and early 20th century. The inaugural meeting was held on Thursday 27th July 1871 on the sandy shores under the direction of the Stewards John Feehan, Robert Corrigan and Nicholas Halligan. A one mile Flat race, sandwiched between two hurdle races, was won by Mr C Mackey’s Sir Roger, while the opening Hurdle race over 2 miles went to Catastrophe owned by Mr James. After a second Hurdle race was won by Mr M Balfe’s The Little One the day concluded with a pony race. Meetings were popular, well supported events which continued to be staged for the next 23 years. After racing lapsed in 1894 frequent efforts were made to revive the meeting, usually held on ‘the velvet Strand on the bold promontory of Clogerhead’. Those efforts finally came to fruition on Friday 10th August 1900 when the one mile Handicap Plate was won by Mr E Delany’s Royston Prince at the expense of Marshall Music and Bellotte, while the Committee Plate went to Honeymoon II owned by Mr W T Brabazon, whose relation had provided Swinford with their course at an earlier time. |
